What is Daxxify®?

Daxxify® is a revolutionary injectable medication used to relax frown lines. The neuromodulator is FDA-approved and works to help smooth moderate to severe lines between the brows by relaxing the underlying muscles that cause wrinkles.

The active ingredient in Daxxify® is a purified protein called botulinum toxin type A, the same found in BOTOX®, Dysport® and Xeomin®. The big difference is that Daxxify® has a peptide that helps keep the active ingredient stuck to the nerve terminal, giving a longer-lasting result. This means instead of the average 3-4 month duration with most neurotoxins like BOTOX®, Daxxify® can give you a 4-6 month duration of effect. Daxxify® also has a faster onset with effects showing as soon as 24 hours after treatment.

Daxxify® is also unique because it is the only FDA-approved neurotoxin that uses a peptide as a stabilizer and does not contain human or animal byproducts.

What Does This Mean for You?

This means that you could have a treatment that lasts longer than your current neurotoxin. If your current treatment wears off after 3 months, for instance, Daxxify® might not wear off for 5 or 6 months. This is great news for people who have experienced a duration of less than 3-4 months, or for people who would prefer to come into the office only twice per. If you are happy with your current neuromodulators (i.e. BOTOX®, Dysport® or Xeomin®), there is no need to switch.

How Does Daxxify® Compare to BOTOX®?

Both Daxxify® and BOTOX® are injectable medications used to temporarily improve the appearance of facial wrinkles. However, there are some key differences.

One of the main differences is Daxxify® lasts longer than BOTOX® . Daxxify® can last for 4-6 months while BOTOX® typically lasts for 3-4 months. Additionally, Daxxify® generally acts faster with effects beginning to show just 24 hours after treatment®. Typically, it may be several days before BOTOX® takes effect.

Both treatments are made with botulinum toxin type A, but they differ in how they stabilize the toxin. BOTOX® uses proteins, while Daxxify® uses peptides.

How Long Does it Take for Daxxify® to Work?

You may see initial results with Daxxify® as early as 24 hours after treatment, and typically within two days. Most people will see noticeable results within two weeks. Initial results can include signs of reduced muscle activity and smoother appearance, while noticeable results are wrinkle reduction in the treated area.

Revance Therapeutics manufactures Daxxify® in California. Revance Therapeutics is a biotechnology company. Daxxify® states it is the only prescription frown line treatment made in the United States.

How Does Daxxify® Work?

Daxxify® works similarly to the other neuromodulators, in that it causes a disruption to the signal from the nerve to the targeted muscle, causing the muscle to relax. This is not permanent, but can last 4-6 months, longer than the other FDA-approved neurotoxins or modulators, which are approved for 3-4 months.

What benefits can I expect?

After getting Daxxify®, you can expect wrinkles on your forehead and around your eyes to become smoother, your brow may be lifted, and your eyes may become more open. Results may be seen as soon as 24 hours after the treatment and noticeable results will be seen within two weeks. After getting Daxxify®, your overall facial expression will show more relaxation and alertness. Results and side effects depend on which areas are treated.

Are there any negatives?

Let’s understand the numbers. 50% of people who get Daxxify® have a 4-6 month duration. That means of the other 50%, some get less and some get more (yes, some people got 8 months!).

The statistics for BOTOX® and Dysport® are that 50% get 3-4 months and the other half get less or more. So not everyone gets the same duration and this has always been true. Daxxify® side effects are no different from any other neuromodulators.

Is there any downtime?

There is little to no downtime with Daxxify® as you can resume your daily activities immediately after your treatment. There is a small possibility of getting a bruise that can last a few days to 2 weeks.

What are the risks and side effects of Daxxify®?

The most common side effect is a small pinpoint bruise. Occasionally one or both eyebrows become too elevated, which is easily corrected (we actually perform our injections to prevent this). The least common side effects are a droopy brow or eyelid, and very rarely is double vision. We inject very precisely and dilute our Daxxify® minimally to avoid the migration of toxin to other areas.

If it does occur, it is temporary, although we will do whatever we can (prescription eye drops, additional procedures to attempt correction) to resolve this. Prior to treatment, your medical provider and cosmetic coordinator will discuss all potential risks and side effects with you and answer any additional questions you may have.

How will I look and feel during and after the treatment?

Most patients find that the procedure is very tolerable. The needle is tiny and cold air and ice packs minimize the pinprick sensation during injection. You will lay down, the treatment area will be thoroughly cleansed, and your provider will ask you to frown, smile, and look surprised. These facial expressions will cause you to activate the muscles to be injected. The provider will mark the injection spots with a washable pen and then proceed with the treatment, usually 5 to 20 injections. The treatment takes about 10 minutes and you can return to work or daily activities immediately following. First-time patients are often relieved afterward because the procedure was easier than they had anticipated.

What are the pre and post-instructions for Daxxify® injections?

To prevent bruising after treatment, do not take aspirin-containing products or high-dose vitamin E supplements (unless your doctor has recommended otherwise) for 10 days prior to the procedure. Vitamin E within a typical multivitamin may be taken during this time. The injected area may look like a mosquito bite for 20 to 60 minutes and be swollen for a few hours. Little red areas may appear but they resolve in a few days. Bruising is uncommon but if it occurs, it may require 7 to 10 days to clear. In the meantime, the bruise can be camouflaged with makeup, which may be applied immediately after treatment.

You can facilitate Daxxify® absorption by making frowns, raising your eyebrows, smiling, and squinting. Do this several times for 1-2 hours after the injections. Try not to fall asleep for 4 hours after the treatment because the injected Daxxify® may spread to nearby areas and cause unwanted relaxation of other muscles. Feel free to resume your regular skin care immediately after treatment.

Avoid aspirin-containing products or high-dosage vitamin E supplements for 48 hours after the treatment unless your doctor has recommended otherwise.

Where can I have Daxxify® injected?

You can have Daxxify® injected in your forehead, Brow (“11”s), crow’s feet, brow lift, bunny lines (nose), neck lines, lips, frown lines, brow depressors (eyebrows). Other areas that are off-label (not yet approved by the FDA for this area), include the chewing muscles (masseter injections) to slim the face or help treat TMJ, the neck muscles for neck bands, and the lower jawline to create a crisper-looking jawline.

How long does Daxxify® last?

Daxxify® lasts anywhere from 4-6 months. This long-lasting effect is what makes Daxxify® different from BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport® and Xeomin®. The latter 3 neurotoxin brands tend to last for less time, around 3-4 months.

What is the cost of Daxxify®?
