Prevention + Detection = Protection
Skin cancer is a topic that’s often overlooked until it hits close to home, but understanding its prevention and early detection can make all the difference. As I often emphasize to my patients, education is the first step toward safeguarding your health. With over 5 million cases of skin cancer diagnosed annually in the United States, it’s crucial to understand the risks, recognize warning signs, and know how to protect yourself.
One of the most important messages I share is that skin cancer doesn’t discriminate. It affects people of all skin types, ages, and lifestyles. While certain risk factors like excessive UV exposure, fair skin, or a family history of skin cancer can increase vulnerability, no one is immune. That’s why regular skin checks, both at home and with a dermatology provider are essential.
Early detection saves lives. Skin cancer is often highly treatable when caught in its early stages, but the key is vigilance. I always tell my patients to familiarize themselves with their skin. Look for changes in moles or spots, and keep an eye out for new growths. The ABCDE rule—Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, and Evolving over time—is a simple yet effective guideline for spotting potential warning signs of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Prevention is equally vital. Protecting your skin doesn’t mean avoiding the sun entirely—it means being smart about your exposure. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days, and don’t forget often-missed areas like your ears, lips, and the tops of your feet. Seek shade during peak sun hours and wear protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses.
As a dermatology PA-C, I’m often asked, “What’s the best way to ensure I’m doing enough?” My answer is twofold: prevention and routine professional skin exams.
